Brand Voice Grid

*We highly recommend keeping the Brand Voice Grid open as you write the content and refer to it often to see if your wording matches the requested brand voice.*

KEYWORDS

Each brief will have several lists of keywords. YOU MUST CHECK THAT THE PRIMARY/SECONDARY KEYWORDS ARE USED THE LISTED NUMBER OF TIMES IN THE BRIEF or USED WHERE YOU CAN NATURALLY IN THE CONTENT.

 • Content MUST include the Primary, secondary the listed number of times. If no number is listed, try to use these keywords once every 100 words or so. Some keywords may overlap, so check that EACH keyword appears the listed number of times (example: “cover letter” does not count in “cover letter templates” if both cover letter and cover letter templates are keywords on the list).
 • “Must-Have,” “Recommended,” and “Additional” keywords do NOT have to appear in the content, but try to use them naturally where you can.
 • All keywords should be used naturally – please do not force them. If they won’t fit naturally into the content, it is okay to not use them.
 • Please fix any spelling/grammar errors in the keywords.

Do’s and Don’ts

 • BE CONCISE and to the point. There should be NO fluff wording in these.
 • Please use the Oxford (serial) comma.
 • Use active voiceNO passive voice! Use this free grammar checker.
 • Include your Table of Contents from the Brief below the metadescription. Make sure the headers match what’s in the TOC.
 • All content must be at an 8th-grade reading level (NOT higher). You can use Hemingwayapp.com (the free grammar checker) to help check for reading level.
 • Don’t use “OK.” Please spell out the word “okay.”
 • Don’t write the word “percent.” Use the symbol “%” instead.
 • Please include 1 high-value internal link to a Resume-Now page.
 • Include 1 high-value links to a well-researched external site. BOLD prefers domains that end with .gov, .edu, or .org, but newspapers and job-related sites work well if the content is reputable.
 • NEW: Do NOT use questions as lead-ins to paragraphs. Avoid using questions in content body as much as possible.

IMPORTANT TERMS TO UNDERSTAND:

 • Resume format refers to how a jobseeker organizes information in a resume. There are three main resume formats: chronological, functional, and hybrid
 • Resume file format refers to how your resume is saved, i.e. in a Word doc, as a PDF, or as simple text (.txt)
 • Resume samples and examples refer to pre-made resumes that LC users can study to get ideas for what to include in their own resume. Samples can be found here. Examples can be found here.

Follow the detailed directions in the brief. If you have ANY questions or are unsure about some instructions, please email Britainy at [email protected]

Follow these steps to help ensure your content makes sense and is following brand voice guidelines:

 1. Create a Table of Contents-TOC/H1 – This is the guide for the reader. Are the TOC and headers matching?
 2. Does the TOC make sense  – Does each TOC make sense to someone coming to the page cold. Is the page ordered correctly in terms of at the top should be the most valuable content that answers search intent – information the reader is looking for.
 3. Are the TOCs creative/compelling –  They must be clear, answer intent and encourage the reader to click on them. There is a balance here  – sometimes plain and to the point is best. We also need to be consistent on sections readers will find on all pages, such as FAQs headers and other standing sections. No need to rename these sections from page-to-page.
 4. Is the page content on-brand – Refer to the brand guide for tone, key messaging and brand word usage. For instance, the word “Perfect” is only used with My Perfect Resume.
 5. Intros should match intent/page expectations –  Intros need to actually intro what the reader is about to read
 6. Content under the H1s has to reflect the H1s – The content must repeat the H1 and provide insight on the subject matter.
 7. Would the page pass the “send a friend” reference test – Would the executive leadership team send a relative or friend to this page for this topic or to a competitor page. If the answer is the latter – there is a problem.

5 Resume Writing Tips to Impress Recruiters
1. Avoid
Generic Language: A common mistake that rookie resume writers make is using language that is far too general. You want to tout professional competencies and build your credibility by clearly demonstrating past successes. Nailing the right balance is challenging, but it’s much simpler when you create a professional resume from suggested pre-written phrases and bullet points we offer that pack a punch.

 1. Customize Your Resume for the Job: It might seem obvious that you need to customize your resume for the position you want but how exactly do you personalize a resume? What is a hiring manager looking for?
 • A prospective employer wants to see a list of your relevant qualifications. Don’t simply list every job you’ve held.

Provide details that show the similarities between your prior work

 • and the job at hand.
 • Concentrate on keywords from the job ad. Our resume builder will help you with suggested skills and equally as important, keywords by industry and job title. These two components can make the difference in whether your resume is considered.
 1. Focus on Accomplishments: It is important to avoid a resume that is little more than a list of past job duties. Employers want to see the impact of your work rather than a list of your day-to-day responsibilities. Every line of your resume should include details about accomplishments or skills that make you a good candidate for the job. Customize this to respond to the job posting itself. The more, the better.
 2. Find the Right Layout and Style: Information is important, but so is context. Even if you have a great skill set, a poor layout may distract a potential employer from your resume’s content. Choosing the right format keeps the focus on you. LiveCareer’s Resume Builder eliminates the guesswork out of formatting and design. Our numerous templates help you pick the right resume format to best highlight your achievements. Our easy-to-use builder allows you to produce multiple designs in just a few clicks.
 1. Help an Employer Envision You in the Job: Resume writing is all about directing your readers to a single conclusion: that you are the right person for the job. Using the right word choices can help. You can achieve this result by using our resume builder, which aids you in finding industry-specific bullet points, the most desired skills for your industry, and job-specific keywords to tell the story of your work successes.

BLADE 6

Identify Resume Keywords to Pass an ATS

You know that your resume needs to include complete sentences, proper punctuation, and up-to-date information. But did you also know that you need specific keywords in your resume to make it to a recruiter? To accomplish this task, study the job ad to see what they employer is seeking in candidates. Then, use our resume builder which will provide additional ideas to make sure you’ve covered all your bases.

Jobseekers often find it surprising to learn about applicant tracking systems. An ATS is a program that many prospective employers — up to 90% — use to screen out unqualified candidates. Experts estimate that ATS may filter out 75 percent of all applications submitted for a job. This means that many job applicants never even have a hiring manager look at their resume

An ATS scans your resume for keywords set by the hiring manager or recruiter. Ensuring that your document meets the requirements can be daunting. LiveCareer’s Resume Builder suggests pre-written phrases and keywords that can help you pass the ATS and get closer to the career you want.

Resume Builder FAQs

 1. Is it easy to learn how to write a resume?

Resume writing isn’t necessarily a difficult task. It may have an intimidating reputation, and many jobseekers view it as the most difficult part of the process. On the contrary, though, writing a cover letter or resume can be simple with the right help. If writing a resume does not come naturally to you, you can learn how by using LiveCareer’s Resume Builder. Taking tips from our samples, examples, and templates can give you the inspiration you need to get started.

 1. Are resume keywords critical to getting an interview?

Yes. Job candidates who never seek out resume help may not realize how crucial keywords are. As well, selecting the right keywords is important to getting your resume past an employer’s applicant tracking system and landing an interview, too. You should always use keywords that are specific to the job you are applying to. If you don’t, your resume may not make it past the ATS and may never land before a human recruiter.

 1. What’s the best format for my resume?

The ideal format for a resume depends on several factors. Recruiters typically prefer a chronological resume format because it makes it easy to assess a candidate’s career path. However, for those jobseekers who are new to the workforce or who may have employment gaps in their past, a functional or hybrid resume format may offer more flexibility for emphasizing skills over a solid work history.

 1. How long does it take to make a resume?

How long it takes to write a resume depends on how much work experience you have and what kind of resume you are writing. Some people spend hours creating theirs, while others invest much less time. LiveCareer promises to help users create a well-written, well-designed professional resume in a matter of minutes. To a hiring manager, though, it will look like it took hours to create.

 1. Can LiveCareer’s Resume Builder help me write my resume?
