UPDATE: Do NOT cite The Muse anymore!

My Perfect Resume Brand Tone/Voice:

  • Primarily first-person voice but use other voices when necessary.
  • Conversational but not sloppy.
    • Please use contractions as often as possible. “You are” is a little too formal for this brand.
  • Friendly but not long-winded.
    • Focus on short, colloquial sentences. “You dudes,” is too far, but “Back in the old days of the ’90s’” is okay.
  • Sense of perfection
  • Key terms to use AT LEAST ONCE in the content – perfect, best, first-in-class

KEYWORDS

Each brief will have several lists of keywords. YOU MUST CHECK THAT THE PRIMARY/SECONDARY KEYWORDS ARE USED THE LISTED NUMBER OF TIMES IN THE BRIEF.

  • Content MUST include the Primary, secondary the listed number of times. If no number is listed, try to use these keywords once every 100 words or so. Some keywords may overlap, so check that EACH keyword appears the listed number of times (example: “cover letter” does not count in “cover letter templates” if both cover letter and cover letter templates are keywords on the list).
  • “Recommended” and “Additional” keywords do NOT have to appear in the content, but try to use them naturally where you can.
  • All keywords should be used naturally – please do not force them. If they won’t fit naturally into the content, it is okay to not use them.
  • Please fix any spelling/grammar errors in the keywords.
  •

Do’s and Don’ts

  • BE CONCISE and to the point. There should be NO fluff wording in these.
  • Please use the Oxford (serial) comma.
  • Use active voiceNO passive voice! Use this free grammar checker.
  • All content must be at an 8th-grade reading level (NOT higher). You can use Hemingwayapp.com (the free grammar checker) to help check for reading level.
  • Voice MUST MATCH the brand voice as shown in the Example.
  • Don’t use “OK.” Please spell out the word “okay.”
  • Don’t write the word “percent.” Use the symbol “%” instead.
  • If a job title is listed, the information MUST BE SPECIFIC TO THAT JOB TITLE. It cannot be general information that applies to any and every job, it must be very, very, VERY specific (use O*NET and Indeed to research specifics for any job title).
  • Please include 1 or 2 high-value internal links to any of BOLD’s brands (My Perfect Resume, LiveCareer, Resume-Now, ResumeBuilder, HLoom).
  • Include 1 or 2 high-value links to a well-researched external site. BOLD prefers domains that end with .gov, .edu, or .org, but newspapers and job-related sites work well if the content is reputable.
  •

IMPORTANT TERMS TO UNDERSTAND:

  • Resume format refers to how a jobseeker organizes information in a resume. There are three main resume formats: chronological, functional, and hybrid
  • Resume file format refers to how your resume is saved, i.e. in a Word doc, as a PDF, or as simple text (.txt)
  • Resume samples and examples refer to pre-made resumes that LC users can study to get ideas for what to include in their own resume. Samples can be found here. Examples can be found here.

Follow the detailed directions in the brief. If you have ANY questions or are unsure about some instructions, please email Britainy at [email protected]

If you are unsure if your source is a competitor, just ask.

Follow these steps to help ensure your content makes sense and is following brand voice guidelines:

  1. Create a Table of Contents-TOC/H1 – This is the guide for the reader. Are the TOC and headers matching?
  2. Does the TOC make sense  – Does each TOC make sense to someone coming to the page cold. Is the page ordered correctly in terms of at the top should be the most valuable content that answers search intent – information the reader is looking for.
  3. Are the TOCs creative/compelling –  They must be clear, answer intent and encourage the reader to click on them. There is a balance here  – sometimes plain and to the point is best. We also need to be consistent on sections readers will find on all pages, such as FAQs headers and other standing sections. No need to rename these sections from page-to-page.
  4. Is the page content on-brand – Refer to the brand guide for tone, key messaging and brand word usage. For instance, the word “Perfect” is only used with My Perfect Resume.
  5. Intros should match intent/page expectations –  Intros need to actually intro what the reader is about to read
  6. Content under the H1s has to reflect the H1s – The content must repeat the H1 and provide insight on the subject matter.
  7. Would the page pass the “send a friend” reference test – Would the executive leadership team send a relative or friend to this page for this topic or to a competitor page. If the answer is the latter – there is a problem.

|5 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Cover Letters|

1. How do I make a universal cover letter for an entry level job with no experience?

You can create a basic cover letter outline for an entry-level job with no experience, but do not make the mistake of thinking it is a “one size fits all” cover letter. It’s essential to tailor your cover letter for each specific job application. Describe your skill set using the language of the job description.

You can, however, choose a cover letter format, font, and a relevant skill or two that apply to your specific industry. Our cover letter tips can assist you in this task.

3. How do I write a cover letter?

First include your contact information, salutation, and introduction. Use this space to introduce yourself and begin a compelling argument as to why you’re a good fit for the role.

Then write your body paragraphs, conclusion, and sign-off. Here, you must share accomplishments, reiterate your claim, and use a professional sign-off (such as “Respectfully yours,” or “Sincerely”). Our samples take care of most of the hard work for you regarding each component. Use them to create your own unique letter.

Remember to proofread your finished work. Hiring managers will notice even a minor typo. The My Perfect Cover Letter Builder will help find and fix all errors in grammar and spelling. With the help of our professional cover letter samples and our cover letter builder, you can write a document that will compel a recruiter to consider your resume.

4. Are cover letter samples addressed to whom it may concern?

As our cover letter samples show, you should not use “To Whom It May Concern” in your salutation. It is far better to address the hiring manager by name. Writing a specific salutation instead of a generic one can boost interest in your candidacy. It shows that you put extra effort into your application.

Learn who to address in your letter by first looking at the job description. If it does not mention the person, research the company’s website. If you still have no luck, you can call the human resource department. As a last resort, you can write “Dear [Company Name].”

5. What is a good format for a cover letter?

Our samples exemplify the best formats for a professional cover letter. Only on rare occasions should your length exceed a single page. Stick to about four paragraphs. After your introductory paragraph, write one or two body paragraphs before crafting your brief conclusion and your sign-off.

Bullet points are acceptable, but steer clear of more elaborate formatting tools. Complex color schemes, borders, graphics, and shading only distract readers from the most important part of your letter: its content. Send this document in the body of an email or as a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment.

|5 Frequently Asked Questions About Cover Letters|

How do I make a universal cover letter for an entry-level job with no experience?

Start with an introductory paragraph to explain who you are, what position you wish to apply for, and how you discovered the opportunity. If a connection referred you, mention their name.

In your next paragraph, mention your relevant skill sets and accomplishments. Use the job description to help you write this part. You may not have job experience, but that doesn’t mean you’re not qualified for the role. Use this section to share your stellar talents. Expand on those you mentioned in your resume.

Wrap up the letter by reiterating why you’d be a great fit for the team. Thank the employer for his or her time and sign off with a handwritten signature.

What are cover letter examples?

Cover letter examples are what they sound like: sample cover letters that show best practices. Just like a resume example, a cover letter example provides a job seeker a template for creating the perfect cover letter. Good cover letter examples contain clear and concise formatting that is easy for job seekers to emulate.

Our cover letter examples provide more than just a template — they also provide tips, pre-written text examples, and industry-specific lingo. Check it out and you’ll see a sample for every role from medical assistant to sales representative.

How do I write a cover letter example?

You don’t have to write a cover letter example because we did it for you! Our cover letter examples show you what well-written professional cover letters look like. Use them to gain insight into your own cover letter creation. For more guidance, use our cover letter builder to wow recruiters.

Do cover letter examples use to whom it may concern?

To whom to address your cover letter, that is the question. You should never use the generic phrases “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam” when writing your cover letter. Instead, use the hiring manager’s name if you know it. If you don’t, do your research. If you find a name, precede it with “Dear” or “Hello.” If you can’t find a name, address your letter to the company itself.

What is a good format for a cover letter?

Use a format similar to the ones you see in our cover letter examples. Here’s a basic format that works every time: start with your contact information on the left side of the page, add a salutation, write an introduction, craft one or two body paragraphs that argue why you’re great for the job, close by reiterating your interest in the job and thanking the employer for their time, and use a professional sign-off.
