StateRequirement (staterequirement.com) helps people learn how to get licensed in a state to be insurance agents. You will be taking an existing doc and altering the information in it so that it reflects the most current requirements for the named state.

Guidelines:

  • Do NOT make any changes to highlighted text.
  • Do not worry about the images in the doc – just ignore them.
  • Research the information to renew an insurance license in the assigned state. Be sure to use OFFICIAL sources, such as the state’s website, for your information.
    • Example: For Georgia’s license renewal requirements, the following sources were used:
      • https://www.sircon.com/stateInformationCenter/georgia.js
      • phttps://www.nipr.com/rules_ga_rr.htm
    • Your sources MUST reflect the state requirements AS OF 2018 or the most current information available. Be sure you do NOT cite requirements from 2017 or earlier unless that is the most current information.
  • If you cannot find any information for the assigned state, you may need to make a phone call to the relevant state department to confirm the requirements.

Format:

  • Download the State Renewal Template doc.
  • Replace all instances of [state] with the assigned state name.
  • Change any unhighlighted text to reflect the requirements in the assigned state. You do not need to rewrite any paragraphs – just change the specific requirements to reflect the assigned state.
  • Be sure to provide the appropriate links to sites where people can renew their state insurance license online.
  • Include the address of the state department in charge of insurance license renewals.
  • If your state has more than 2 steps required for the insurance license renewal process, you can add sections for the extra steps. Just label them “3,” “4,” etc. and include a header and the information in the body.
  • Update the date at the end of the doc to whatever month you are writing the doc.
    • Example: Information on this page has been gathered by a multitude of sources and was most recently updated in October 2018.
  • Do not make any changes to the highlighted text.
  • Save article name as the state you are writing for. Example: Georgia
  • Send to [email protected]
  • Put “State Requirement” in the subject line of your email

How To Renew Your Insurance License in Georgia

In Georgia, insurance licenses expire every two years. The expiration will be on the last day of your birth month, biennially, based on the anniversary of your original license year. This means that if you were licensed on an even-numbered year, your license will expire on the last day of your birth month in the next even-numbered year.

There is no requirement to take another exam from the state, though depending on the format of your continuing education, it is possible that you may take a short knowledge test at the end of the course to be sure that you understand important insurance concepts, laws, and regulations.

This this is the state you reside in, then renewing your license will also keep any non-resident license you have in good standing. You will still need to pay the license renewal fee for non-resident licenses held in other states.

Georgia Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

The state of Georgia requires that resident individual licensees complete twenty-four (24) credit hours of continuing education every two year renewal period. Of those hours, three (3) of those hours must be in the subject of ethics or consumer protection. Credits cannot include the same course taken repeatedly in one reporting period.

Note: It is recommended to complete all continuing education credits at least thirty (30) days prior to the expiration date of the license. This will give the CE provider time to report the successful completion to the department of insurance. Your CE courses can be taken any time within your two-year license term.

If you have a producer license in more than one line of authority (ex. Property & Casualty and Life & Health), you do not need to complete double the hours.

You may take your continuing education courses either in person in a classroom setting or online as a self-paced course. The online courses usually require a reading of the subject at hand, then a test at the end.

Upon completion of these courses, the CE company who you took the course through should send the certificate of completion directly to the state. You should, however, print a copy of this certificate to keep in your records just in case there is a dispute later.
