Holiday Dinners Around the World

What is the one thing that everyone loves about the holidays? If you answered food, then you’re probably right. In holiday traditions around the world, there are three crucial components: family, friends and of course a good meal.

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, it’s all about being close to your loved ones and bringing everyone together around the dinner table.

North American Traditions

When it comes time for a Christmas or New Year’s feast from Canada to Mexico, one dish that many of these feasts have in common is the turkey.

Lately, a trend that has kicked off through North America is the bacon wrapped turkey. If you’re looking for a new way to dress up the Christmas dinner, consider Bar-S hardwood smoked bacon crisp around your turkey. Prepare the turkey as you normally would, except for in the last step, lay strips of bacon over top, wrap it all in tinfoil and put it in the oven as usual.

In addition to the main course, holiday parties and family get-togethers demand appetizers. Consider Bar-S franks wrapped in crispy dough or mini lunchmeat sandwiches.

Where Christmas has one large meal and many appetizers at the Christmas party, Kwanzaa is a seven-day long celebration! Every day is an opportunity for good food. Delicious recipes that range from traditional African, South American and Caribbean line the tables. The main feast happens on December 31st. This feast, or the karamu, you can complete in a buffet style.

On Kwanzaa, Creole cooking is a big hit. To keep things simple, try using Bar-S hot links to create a spicy take on sausage gumbo. Cook the sausages separate from the rest of the gumbo. You can boil or fry them to your preference. Then, add the sausages to the rest of your gumbo recipe and continue cooking for about 30 minutes.

For Hanukkah, eight days means eight opportunities for family meals and for coming together. Fried foods are prevalent in Hanukkah tradition. From fried potato pancakes to fried jelly doughnuts delicious food is everywhere. Whereas Christmas and Kwanzaa have feasts, Hanukkah stresses traditional foods throughout the season over one large meal.

European Traditions

The majority of Europeans celebrate emphasize Christmas as the main winter holiday. While Hanukkah is also celebrated, it’s considered minor compared to the United States. The other major difference from the US is the types of foods you’ll see on the dinner table. In most of Europe, Christmas Mass is important. This means that the dinner on Christmas Eve is often lighter or eaten earlier in the day.

In Germany, one of those most popular Christmas meals is also one of the most simple: sausages with potato salad. Kids love it, because it’s simple and tastes good. Parents too, because it is so simple to prepare and you can make it in large quantities without taking all day. Bar-S sausages are easy and quick to cook. You simply boil, fry or grill them to how you prefer it. Just be careful and don’t let the sausages split!

If you’re interested in trying this out, you can even cut up some Bar-S salami to add extra flavor to the potato salad.

One of the marked differences between North America and Europe are the Christmas breakfasts. In France, sweet pastries are a seasonal way to start Christmas. In Austria, you will find tortes with jam and hazelnut. For an English breakfast, fried, savory foods are popular. After all, who doesn’t like the smell of bacon frying on Christmas morning?

Another European inspired Christmas breakfast idea is to use cold meats. Let your family choose what they want to eat throughout the morning. Take your favorite Bar-S deli meats and line a platter with meat and cheese. Cotto salami, in particular is a festive meat choice.

European holidays, like North American, focus on family and food. Around the world, the differences are in the popularity of the holiday, the local food and the traditions. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or where you plan to be this holiday season, celebrate it right with good food that brings all your family and friends together. Look to Bar-S for inspiration when it comes to bacon wrapped turkey, sausage and potato salad and all of the appetizers that your guests are going to crave.

Have a Thankful Bar-S Season!

Keywords: holiday Bar-S dishes to create this holiday season!

Festive food is one reason to be thankful throughout the holiday season. Some recipes become family traditions, but you can make any dish more memorable with quality Bar-S products. Here are several ideas for updating classic holiday dinner sides, serving scrumptious snacks, and whipping up delicious desserts for which everyone will be thankful.

Dinner Sides

You can round out most side dishes by adding flavorful bacon or sausage. Bar-S Naturally Hardwood Smoked Thick Cut Bacon is a perfect complement for cornbread stuffing or mashed potatoes. Prepare a sausage dressing with Classic Smoked Sausage or Polska Kielbasa and dried parsley, rosemary, and sage.

Bacon also provides a special finishing touch for vegetables. Take a green bean casserole to the next level with chopped bacon. Sprinkle thin crispy strips over a bowl of creamy roasted butternut squash soup. Combine crumbled bacon and brown sugar and serve on top of baked sweet potatoes.

Seasonal Snacks

Festive finger foods can keep everyone feeling full and happy between meals. Pigs in a Blanket are simple to prepare and customize with Bar-S franks and hot links. All you need is a tube of crescent dough and your favorite franks or links.  Choose from classic, turkey, beef, pork, or chicken franks. You can also make this recipe with cheddar franks or Bar-S Hot Links in classic, cheddar, or cheddar and jalapeno flavors.

If you want a simple, light lunch option on the day of a big holiday dinner, don’t forget about our delicious lunchmeat. Build sandwiches with slices of Bar-S Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, Black Forest Turkey Breast, or Applewood Smoked Turkey Breast. Guests can layer on a little cranberry sauce for a taste of the season. You can also prepare ham or bologna sandwiches and mix in slices of Bar-S Cotto Salami or Spiced Luncheon Loaf.

As dinnertime approaches, try a new twist on holiday appetizers. Put the finishing touch on a batch of deviled eggs with small pieces of Bar-S Naturally Hardwood Smoked Bacon. You can also roll stuffing or dressing and pieces of cooked bacon or sausage into balls and insert paper or wooden sticks to allow for dipping into gravy or cranberry sauce. If you are already serving cornbread bacon stuffing or herbed sausage dressing, this appetizer may be even easier to assemble.

Maple-glazed sausage bites should satisfy your sweet tooth until it’s time for dessert. All you need to do is chop and brown bite-sized pieces of Bar-S Classic Smoked Sausage or Polska Kielbasa. Then, simmer sausage uncovered in one cup of maple syrup mixed with a half-cup of brown sugar until glazed. Stock up on Bar-S bacon, franks, or sausage to make a variety of satisfying snacks.

Holiday Desserts

Dessert is one of the most beloved courses at any holiday feast. A growing number of chefs and home cooks have come to appreciate the unique flavor that bacon brings to sweet recipes. Some tried-and-true combinations include apple pie with bacon, pumpkin or sweet potato pie with crispy bacon on top, and bacon pecan pie with or without chocolate. Bar-S Hardwood Smoked Bacon makes for a surprisingly delicious pie topping. Mix cooked bacon into crumbles or create a lattice top out of interwoven strips before baking.

Bacon caramel apples are another tasty holiday treat. Start by chopping and cooking bacon. Drain off a tablespoon of drippings and add to a saucepan with a bag of unwrapped caramels. Melt this mixture and then dip in each apple on a wooden stick, turning to coat the entire surface. Sprinkle caramel apples with bacon while the coating is still soft and allow it to set. You can also mix up a batch of maple bacon caramel corn with or without nuts.

These are just a few holiday Bar-S dishes to create this holiday season! Bacon and sausage can complement almost any recipe, and franks and lunchmeat are delicious and filling when served in crescent rolls or on buns and sandwiches. Whether you choose to update your favorite family recipes or come up with holiday-themed hot dogs, this is the time of year for making memories that your family and guests will never forget. Be sure to take time to appreciate all of the things for which you are thankful, including delicious food and good company.
