Pack a Tarp and Be Ready for Almost Anything, Including a Nap in a Tarp Hammock
Hiking and backpacking require tight packing skills, but what if you find yourself in a beautiful shady spot that simply begs for a hammock? Having the right tarp and supplies with you means you will be prepared to set up an emergency shelter, stay dry when a rainstorm crosses your path or build a quick and comfy napping spot in the trees. The tarp hammock I prefer is super easy to set up and does not require you to carry around a lot of extra hardware. Keep your pack light and still have exactly what you need when you know how to build this hammock.
Step 1
Supply List:
- 50 – 70 cm of 550 Paracord cut into 2 lengths
- Two c-clamps of any size
- 4’X4′ heavy duty tarp
Step 2
Take a firm grip on the end of the tarp and fold it vertically. Then fold it horizontally in a zig zag pattern – as of if you were making large pleats in the tarp.
Step 3
Tie a hangman’s knot in your paracord and slide it over one pleated end of the tarp. Then pull on the paracord to tighten the knot. Repeat for the other end of the tarp with the 2nd length of paracord.
Step 4
Attach the knotted paracord securely with c-clamps to nearby trees, poles or posts using the trucker’s hitch knot.
Step 5
Carefully spread the pleats of the tarp as you lay down. Now breathe…….
Knowing how to make a simple tarp hammock can be a true game changer. Not only will your back thank you for packing a little bit lighter, but you will be able to truly take a break and simply enjoy nature for as long as you please. Some may even decide to stay an extra night now that there are such comfortable accommodations. Even better is the knowledge that in case of a storm or emergency, the right tarp can come in very handy. It can be a great shelter from water or wind, can provide much-needed shade and can be used as a tool to capture rainwater for drinking or washing if necessary.
