|Introduction| (100-150 words)

Write 3 paragraphs to introduce and accompany the [job title] you will be writing. Include the keyword twice.

Paragraph 1 – Should be based on the information in the ‘What They Do” section in the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook that aligns with the assigned job title. This paragraph should aim to give employers an idea of the most important, day-to-day responsibilities and duties required for the job. *Note: if your title only brings up “Data for Occupations Not Covered in Detail” please follow that link and search on your job title again using CTRL + F. You will see minimal info for that title and a link to the ONET site. That is acceptable source information to use.

Paragraphs 2-3 – Discuss the important qualities and/or skills that are necessary and/or desired for the job. (from https://www.bls.gov/ooh/  “How to become a…/important qualities” section) that are necessary and/or desired for the job. Bring the third paragraph to a close by instructing the reader to consult the example below to get more insight into what goes into a great [job title] job description.

Example:

|Introduction|

Administrative assistants perform a wide variety of office support duties to help an organization operate smoothly. They create spreadsheets and prepare reports and presentations. They also respond to inquiries and manage supplies.

When it comes to the skills section of your administrative assistant job description, you’ll likely want to include the fact that your ideal candidate will have top-notch organizational and interpersonal skills. Some of the responsibilities of this role include keeping files, folders, schedules and supplies in proper order so that an office can run efficiently.

Administrative assistants also interact with clients, customers or staff. They should communicate effectively and be courteous when interacting with others to create a positive work environment and client experience. Have a look at the administrative assistant job description example below to get more insight into what to include in your own write-up.

|[Job Title] Job Description Example|

The header for this section includes the keyword once. Use 2-3 real job descriptions seeded on job board sites (Glassdoor, CareerBuilder, Indeed) as well as the corresponding information found in Career One Stop’s Job Description Writer (http://www.careeronestop.org/businesscenter/jdw/Gettingstarted.aspx) to create a sample [job title] job description. Type in the job title and select a heavily populated state which is likely to have the kind of job you are researching.

The [job title] job description should be separated according to the sections below:

  • |Job Summary| (100-130 words)
  • |Job Responsibilities| (150-250 words)
  • |Job Skills & Qualifications| (30-60 words)

When you go back and forth between the CareerOneStop job descriptions and actual job descriptions, be sure to use precisely the same job title. Don’t include specialized info for other similar job titles because that may not be accurate. For instance, if your Laborer job description is based on the CareerOneStop job title “Laborers and Freight, Stock & Material Movers” don’t add certifications that only Construction Laborers would need.

Specific Guidelines for the Job Descriptions:

  • Use present tense
  • Use second person in the job summary (you)
  • No periods in the duties/responsibilities or skills sections
  • No Oxford (serial) comma

|Job Summary|
 100 – 130 words (3-5 complete sentences)

Format: Paragraph form.

  • This is a general overview of how the role functions within a company or organization.
  • It should broadly define the position, its purpose, and how it fits in with the company’s overall mission and vision.
  • Please primarily use the job description titles examples to understand how to write this rather than Career One Stop.
  • Most important – the summary must be jobseeker-centric – not just a list of responsibilities. Please look at the examples to see what the client is looking for here.
  1. The job summary section should focus on candidate needs, not employer needs. That means focusing on how the worker will contribute to the company and play a role in a broader set of projects and initiatives versus a laundry list of responsibilities or employer expectations. For instance, exciting or challenging projects and the vision for team growth should be mentioned rather than just duties and responsibilities.
  2. Use second person (you, your, etc.) to refer to the potential new hire
  3. Mention who the candidate will report to and which department the position falls in (if the information is available)
  4. This summary must SELL the role, not just detail what it is. When writing this, think like a marketer, but don’t be a pushy salesperson.

|Job Responsibilities|
(150-200 words)

Format: 6-8 bullet points (no periods at the end)

  • This is a bulleted list of the position’s core duties and requirements.
  • It should also give the jobseeker some semblance of the company’s expectations regarding deliverable and end goals.
  • Please start with the ‘Tasks’ section of Career One Stop as a resource and then use the example job descriptions as a secondary resource.
  1. Start each bullet with a present-tense active verb (e.g. rather than say ‘machinery maintenance’, say ‘maintain machinery’)
  2. Be specific (e.g. rather than say ‘edit content’, say ‘edit marketing collateral, including eBooks, white papers, daily blog posts, landing page copy, and email copy).
  3. Include core deliverables (not just duties and requirements) (rather than say ‘write blog posts’, say ‘write blog posts that can increase website traffic and audience engagement’
  4. Include frequency of duties to be performed if applicable (e.g. rather than say ‘edit marketing collateral’, say ‘edit marketing collateral on a daily basis’)
  5. Order the responsibilities in terms of importance

|Job Skills & Qualifications| (30-60 words)

Format: 4-8 bullet points separated into two sections –  Required and Preferred (no periods at the end)

  • This section includes any age limitations, technical or soft skills, product/software knowledge, language abilities, certifications, licensures, years of experience/kind of work experience, and education level necessary to do the job.
  • Please use the ‘Education and Experience’ section of Career One Stop as well as the ‘Work Context’ section and the “Tools & Technologies” section (there may not be much in this one, but check it anyway) of Career One Stop as primary resources. Use the job description examples to cross-check your inclusions and as a secondary resource. DO NOT use the ‘Skills’ section of the Career One Stop site.
  1. Order the skills/qualifications in terms of importance
  2. Qualifications must be realistic. For example, if a job title is new to an industry, don’t expect that person to have years and years of experience.
  3. Skills in the ‘Required’ section are must-haves; those in the ‘Preferred’ section are nice to have

|Conclusion| (100 – 150 words)
